May 26, 2010 -- The science academies of the G8 nations today issued a statement recommending that world leaders commit more funding to improve the health of women, newborns, and children, including expanding access to prenatal and obstetric care. In a separate statement, the academies urged greater support for science education and entrepreneurial training in Africa and other developing regions, noting that such efforts are essential to spur economic growth and meet emerging challenges in public health and food security. The statements are intended to inform discussions at a summit of leaders of the world’s major economies to be held in Canada next month.
