Program That Measures Troop Exposure to Air Pollution in Middle East Should Be Strengthened

May 4, 2010 -- Results from the U.S. Department of Defense enhanced particulate matter surveillance program (EPMSP) document that military personnel deployed in the Middle East are exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter, such as windblown dust or diesel emissions, says a new report from the National Research Council. However, the data collected as part of the EPMSP is not designed to determine whether the exposure is linked to adverse health effects. The program should be strengthened by expanding its surveillance and research protocols.
